Emergent Technology WebQuest

Page history last edited by Diane Schrecker 12 years, 9 months ago

Introduction

Each year, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative and the New Media Consortium collaborate to produce The Horizon Report The 2011 Horizon Report "examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in teaching, learning, and creative inquiry."  Each year,  "six emerging technologies or practices" are featured and their possible uses examined.  Watch the following video to learn what six technologies were selected as ones to watch during the next five years.

Are you familiar with all of these technologies?  How would these technology resources enhance your curriculum? Exploring new and emergent technologies is extremely important to the teaching and learning process. As a teacher you will continually research and evaluate viable emerging technologies that will enable you to “design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize” learning in the classroom” (NETS-T 2).  This WebQuest is designed to help you "locate, explore, research, evaluate, and review emerging technologies" (NETS-T 3d).

For this assignment, you will be introduced to trending and emerging technologies currently available for classroom use. After selecting two technologies to explore, you will research and present a professional review on your emergent technology wiki. Your review narrative will discuss technology pros and cons, consider utilization/integration into a classroom, reflect upon the learning curve needed for an instructor (beginner and more advanced users) to facilitate the technology, and addresses the feasibility of using it in a district with limited web access and/or stringent acceptable use policies. There will be opportunity for you to explore your classmate’s technology review selections and present professional comment/opinion to the group.

Where to start?  Begin with the WebQuest Task.

Task

Congratulations! Prior to beginning this WebQuest you successfully created your own personal wiki space and are now ready to begin researching emerging technologies that will be reviewed on your wiki. (If you have not prepared your Wiki, return to the assignment folder and do so before continuing.)

What are trending and emerging - or emergent - technologies? Generally speaking they are technologies that will have some type of significant impact on the world, or in our classroom.  These are technologies that will help to create the "next generation" of schools.

"There is no one path to the school of tomorrow." --School 2.0

Choose two technologies from the provided list (see, process) that are of interest to you, or that you would like to further explore.  Feel free to peruse the list and follow active Internet links to basic introductory information about the technology.

  • You will research two (2) technologies and provide a detailed professional review narrative for each on your emergent technology wiki.
  • Your review will include at least three working Internet links to further information about each selected technology.
  • Reviews will discuss pros and cons, consider utilization/integration into a classroom, reflect on the learning curve needed for the instructor to facilitate the technology, and address the feasibility of using it in a district with limited web access and/or stringent acceptable use policies.
  • Technology reviews will be posted on the personal wiki already created, as individual, titled wiki pages (remember, three pages total).
  • A link to your classmates wiki's will be posted in course announcements after the initial due date.
  • You will explore two of your classmates technology reviews and provide a thoughtful, professional critique of a selected technology review on their wiki.

Let's get started ... move on to process.

Introduction | Task | Process | Resources | Evaluation

Process

Step One:  Select and explore an emerging technology

Below is a list of trending and emerging technologies; keep in mind the concept of "emerging technology" is very subjective and depends on the technology experience each user brings to the assignment.  Within the list there may be things you are familiar with or have used in the classroom, there may also be resources that are brand new.  If you are interested in a technology not featured, contact me for approval prior to moving on to step twoYou will be choosing two (2) technologies to explore and review on your emergent technology wiki.

Keep in mind this list is a starting point, links provide you with basic information needed for further research.  As such, you may NOT use one of these links for your reference list UNLESS it is a link to a software home page.

Step Two: Research Your Emergent Technologies!

As you research your technology and begin drafting your professional review, it is necessary to address the following questions within the narrative:

  • discuss pros and cons (the good, the bad, and the ugly) of the technology
  • consider how it could be utilized/integrated into your classroom
  • reflect on the learning curve needed for the instructor to facilitate the technology
  • is cost an issue?
  • address the feasibility of using it in a district with limited web access
  • consider stringent acceptable use policies (will it be blocked?)

Step Three:  Comments

As detailed in the task, after Emergent Technology Wiki URLs are submitted to the assignment drop box (see course calendar for due date), links will be provided to your classmates wiki in the course announcements.  You will have time to explore other technology reviews and choose two for comments (see course calendar for comment due date).  You will provide a thoughtful, professional critique of their reviewswithin the comment section of the selected wikis.

The next section, resources, includes Ashland University Library database and general Internet resources that will assist with emergent technology research process.

Introduction | Task | Process | Resources | Evaluation

Resources

Where should you start?

Begin by using Ashland University Library's Research in Education LibGuides for information regarding education specific research databases.

The Research in Education LibGuide will help you to further investigate your emergent technology and it's classroom potential by highlighting AU Library Databases. These databases will provide access to a professional journals, general articles of interest, and, in the case of ERIC, published conference papers and proceedings.

Working from Off Campus?

It will be necessary to authenticate to use these databases from off campus computers. Be sure to have your Ashland University ID number ready to use.

Working On Campus?

Links will direct users to the database without needing authentication (IP).

Open Access, Digital Libraries & Internet Resources

Beyond traditional search engine resources such as Google, Google Scholar, and Bing, there are open access journals, and digital library depositories available for research.

Interested in Technology Review Samples?

The following links feature technology reviews and wikis created by previous classes. They are for informal informational use only (no guarantee the sample project got an "A").  As detailed above, your review must include pros and cons of the technology, consider how it may be integrated into your classroom, reflect on the learning curve needed to use the technology, discuss cost, provide reflection on feasibility of using it within a district with limited web access and acceptable use policies.
