Introduction

Exploring new and emergent technologies is extremely important to the teaching and learning process. As a teacher you will continually research and evaluate viable emerging technologies that will enable you to “design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize” learning in the classroom” (NETS-T 2).  This WebQuest is designed to help you locate, explore, research, evaluate, and review emerging technologies.

Task

Congratulations! You have already successfully created your own personal wiki space and are ready to begin researching emerging technologies that will be reviewed on your wiki.

What are emerging - or emergent - technologies? Generally speaking they are technologies that will have some type of significant impact on the world, or in our case classroom.  These are technologies that will help to create the "next generation" of schools.

"There is no one path to the school of tomorrow." --School 2.0

Choose at least two technologies from the provided process list that interest you generally, or you view as a viable classroom tool you would like to explore. Follow the links to basic introductory information about the technology.

  • You will research two technologies and provide a detailed professional review narrative for each along with at least three links to further information
  • Reviews will discuss pros and cons, consider utilization/integration into a classroom, reflect on the learning curve needed for the instructor to facilitate the technology, and address the feasibility of using it in a district with limited web access and/or stringent acceptable use policies.
  • Your technology reviews will be posted on your personal wiki, as individual, titled wiki pages.
  • Finally, you will explore at least one of your classmates technology reviews and provide a thoughtful, professional critique on their wiki.

Let's get started ...

Process

Step One:  Select and explore an emerging technology

Choose a technology trend from the list below.  If you are interested in a technology not featured, feel free to contact me for approval prior to moving on to step two.  Keep in mind this list is a starting point, links provide you with introductory information you will need to further research.  You may NOT use one of these links for your reference list UNLESS it is a link to a software home page.

For example, if you select Moodle, the link provided goes to Moodle's home page. In this case you will include the same link but provide three additional resources.

Remember, it is important to include a reference list and URL for your technology.

Step Two: Research Your Emergent Technologies!

As you research your technology trend, it is necessary to; discuss pros and cons (the good, the bad, and the ugly); consider how it could be utilized/integrated into your classroom; reflect on the learning curve needed for the instructor to facilitate the technology;  address the feasibility of using it in a district with limited web access and/or stringent acceptable use policies (will it be blocked?).

The next section includes resources that will assist you with your research.

Resources

Where should you start?

Begin by using Ashland University Library's Research in Education LibGuidesfor information regarding education specific research databases.

How will LibGuides help?

TheResearch in Education LibGuide will help you to further investigate your emergent technology and it's classroom potential by highlighting AU Library Databases. These databases will provide access to a professional journals, general articles of interest, and, in the case of ERIC, published conference papers and proceedings.

Working from Off Campus?

It will be necessary to authenticate to use these databases. Be sure to have your Ashland University ID number ready to use.

Working On Campus?

Links will direct users to the database without needing authentication (IP).

Open Access, Digital Libraries & Internet Resources

Beyond traditional search engine resources such asGoogle,Google Scholar, and Bing, there are open access journals, and digital library depositories available for research.

Evaluation: Rubric Review

This assignment is designed for you to demonstrate your proficiency researching new and emergent technologies and your proficiency using a wiki to integrate technology into the classroom to meet curricular goals. You are required to create a wiki using PBWorks and utilize the platform to review your research of two emergent technologies of interest to you as an educator.

  • Sign up for a BASIC, FREE, PB Works Account @https://plans.pbworks.com/
  • Create a main/front page with a short introductory paragraph describing the purpose of your educational wiki; add two (2) pages to the wiki, one page for each technology review, and link them to the front wiki page.
  • Research at least two emergent technologies from the approved list and includes three informational resources supporting the research; links are provided/cited at the end of the review.
  • A detailed professional review narrative for each technology (2) is presented on individual wiki pages; reviews discuss pros and cons, consider utilization/integration into a classroom, reflect on the learning curve needed for the instructor to facilitate the technology, and address the feasibility of using it in a district with limited web access and/or stringent acceptable use policies.
  • Peer posts are investigated and professional comments made on at least one other review; explore information provided by the post author and provide a thoughtful critique.
  • Assignment completion reflects a clear understanding of integrating technology into the classroom for the teaching and learning process.

Assignment Requirements Points
Created a wiki using PB Works; Wiki includes a main/front page with introductory paragraph, a separate page for each technology review and pages are linked to the main page.

8

Researched at least two (2) emergent technologies from the approved list; each technology has three informational resources supporting the research and links are provided at the end of the review.

6

Emergent technology is professionally reviewed with appropriate links and accompanying narrative description; include pros/cons of technology in the classroom, how it might be successfully integrated into the curriculum, and reflect on the level of expertise needed to make it a viable tool.

10
Investigated peer reviews of classmates and commented on at least one; comment is professional critique of the author’s technology review.
5
Personal information is added to the appropriate class wiki page and includes your name, wiki name, and wiki URL.
